As a general rule of thumb, expenses that are incurred to treat a particular ailment are considered eligible expenses according to the IRS. Preventative care items such as toothpaste, vitamins, and supplement generally are not eligible. Cosmetic procedures and items that do not meaningfully promote the proper function of the body or treat illness or disease are not eligible as well.
